What is a wireless intercom?
A wireless intercom must function in the same fashion as a wired intercom but have the advantage of being wireless and so allow complete freedom of movement.
It should be exclusive to the user group and highly resistant to interference, support at least two or more people in full duplex mode at all times and be constantly open and hands free in operation. It should also be operational for many hours at a time without a break.

Who would use a wireless intercom?
Intercoms with these characteristics whether wired or wireless are essential for many work environments where instant and secure communication with a number of other users are available at any time, regardless of whether there is a pre-existing transmission taking place. In short, the ability to conference.

Operatives in areas of high ambient noise levels or restricted visibility may need to pass information between each other without delay or loss.

Examples include:
Machinery or Process operations
Vehicle intercoms
Crane, quayside, forklift or warehouse operations
Hazardous areas where users are encumbered by protective clothing and equipment
Construction and scaffolding
Firing ranges
Theatres and Broadcasting and studio
Marine operations, ROV Retrieval

The DECT wireless intercom from Atlantic Instruments improves operational safety and efficiency in the workplace.

Components and operation:
A typical four user system will comprise a base station, a handset for each user and a headset for each user.
Each transceiver automatically registers with the base station.
Individuals must remain within range of the base station in order to communicate with each other.
The Base station is mains powered but for additional safety has an internal rechargeable battery which will last for four hours in the event of power failure. Another feature is that this makes the system portable in the field for up to four hours with no supply at all.
A 12 Volt supply can be provided if required for indefinite operation.
The Handsets are rechargeable and will last up to 20 hours, enough for a full shift.

Specification.
The System is based upon the DECT (Digital European Cordless Telephony ) standard.
The frequency used is 1.88 GHz to 1.90 GHz.
Peak output power is 250mW, the average power is 10mW.
The maximum Line of Sight (LOS) range is 200 meters with 50 meters through structures.
The system is Licence Free in all European countries and a total of 112 countries around the world
A maximum of eight users can be accommodated on any one base station.
The base station has the ability to connect to an external communication source such as a telephone, external radio system or another headset or microphone.
The system is confidential and once it is running it cannot be interrupted by another DECT system.
The Coverage can be increased by using additional base stations

Flexibility
This system is adaptable to almost any situation and works extremely well.
Other types of headsets and microphone arrangements are available.
You may feel that this system would be ideal for your application but you have an additional issue due to the nature of your workplace or the job in hand.
I have the experience to deal with any additional requirements you may have.

Accessories for the wireless intercom

Not all users find a headset to be the ideal interface to the intercom system.

Shown here is the desk console unit which is plugged into the handset or basestation to provide a full duplex link to operators outside for instance a control room or office.
